CBC Records, Sorted: What a Junior School Needs from a Management System

The Competency Based Curriculum did not just change what teachers teach, it changed what schools must record. A system designed for the old mean-score report card cannot carry competency levels, strands and sub-strands, or the running portfolio of evidence that CBC assessment depends on. Junior School (Grades 7–9) makes this sharper: more subjects, more teachers per learner, and more formative assessment to track.

Five things CBC assessment demands of your records

  1. Competency levels, not just marks. The system must record performance against expected outcomes, Exceeding, Meeting, Approaching, Below, per strand, not a single percentage.
  2. A learner's history that follows them. Grade 4 to Grade 9 in one place, so a teacher inheriting a class in Term 2 sees the whole picture.
  3. Formative and summative kept apart. Continuous assessment and end-of-term should be visible together but never averaged into a meaningless number.
  4. Teacher workload that scales. With several teachers assessing one learner, entry has to be fast and permissions clear, a subject teacher records their subject, and only theirs.
  5. Reports parents actually understand. A CBC report card is a communication tool. If a guardian cannot read it, it has failed.

Where schools get stuck

Most schools bolt CBC onto a spreadsheet or a system built for 8-4-4. It works until it doesn't, usually when KNEC or the sub-county asks for data the spreadsheet was never structured to give. Retro-fitting structure onto thousands of rows at reporting time is the avoidable crisis behind many late nights in the staffroom.

Build the structure in from the start

Opero models CBC the way the curriculum is actually shaped: learners, classes, subjects, and assessments that hold competency levels, with each teacher seeing only what they are responsible for. And because the school controls its own data, the records you build are yours to export, audit and keep, not a supplier's asset.
